There are many rewards with being a teacher, however it is important to note that it is not a role to be taken lightly – it is a difficult role to fill. As teachers, we need to understand that every child will learn differently.No matter their culture, gender or socio-economic status, s o as teachers you have to encourage and have a level field in your  classrooms. First, teachers are responsible in taking care of the students who are under their supervision with the main objective of assuring their safety and welfare. Second,teachers  should  observe  confidentiality  of  information  that  is  related  with  theircolleagues  students  and  families  that  the  educators  acquire  during  their  teachingprofession, unless the disclosure of this information is needed for the well being of a person.Third, teachers should maintain the good reputation of the teaching profession by showing acts of honesty and integrity as well as making sure that their privateinterests  especially  outside  of  school  does  not  interfere  with  their  professional responsibilities. Fourth,  teachers  should  respect  all  the  members  of  the  schoolcommunity  namely:  students,  parents,   co-workers,  and  school  management  bymaking sure that they are treated equality and are not discriminated by gender, sexual orientation, religion, age, race, and others.Fifth, teachers should conduct their relationship with their students in a professional, respectful, and appropriate manner. Sixth teachers should not practice their teaching responsibilities while in the influence of any substance that weakens their capability to perform their duties properly. Good teachers typically have good organization skills.They have the ability to work with many different types of people. Patience is also a very good quality. It is true that some people, from the time they are i n first grade, know they want to be teachers. For others, the idea to become a teacher can be a sudden insight, or a feeling  that  ferments  for  years  in  some  remote  corner  of  their  consciousness. Regardless of  where  the idea  comes  from,  for  many,  the images  associated  with becoming a teacher are compelling. Teachers must be flexible to handle the inevitable obstacles that occur each day.Teachers must be able to handle problems and a room full of students all at one time. Problems also arise outside of the classroom setting. In addition,  school  politics  and  colleagues  with  different  teaching  styles  can  cause tension. EPISODE 2: My Tools ORGANIZATIONAL PLAN Each day that I  spend in the classroom presents new  challenges. Every situation and each different child requires an individualized response from the teacher. As I’ve observed the organizational plan, the classroom structured is fl exible. The instructions are care both individually and by group.And the teacher is ensuring that furniture arrangement promotes learning opportunities. She has a seating chart. She maintains plans for materials and assignment management. And she creates bulletin boards that foster learning. She ensures bulletin boards are informative, relevant, aesthetic, and related to class activities. SCHEDULING During my observation, I’ve noticed that the teacher is following guidelines to ensure a  successful scheduling. First she  incorporates any  pre-scheduled  school  wide activities and routines into her schedule.She makes sure to include any activities that the whole school needs to be doing at the same time. For instance, many schools havea  Drop  Everything  and  Read  (DEAR)  time  right  after  lunch. Second,  she  createspredictable routines that her  students can  follow easily. Setting  aside a  short amount of time in the morning for students to complete arrival routines and get organized forthe  day  helps  to  teach  elementary  students  the  importance  of  being  prepared. Likewise, having specific dismissal routines they must follow helps them to make surethey  are  taking  home  everything  they  need  at  the  end  of  the  day.Third,  she coordinates with her grade-level peers. Fourth, she allows for some flexibility in her schedule. Lessons can run longer (or shorter) than she expected or some activities like earthquake and fire drills and special assemblies may interrupt her schedule. She said it's okay if every once in a while you don't accomplish everything you planned for the day. I think the activities were scheduled properly. The time was allotted sufficiently for the activity. Individual and group activities were all planned that’s why it saved time and it’s very organized.And through the guidelines she’s following she’ s coming up with an excellent scheduling. RECORD KEEPING The attendance is monitored by checking the permanent seat plan, through this the teacher can record easily the absences and present in the class. The teacher has a record book where she gets every time she checks the attendance. I’ve seen a portfolio cabinet wherein all of the portfolios of the students are put. The teacher said that it’s very helpful if they have portfolio so that they can monitor their individual performance. PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENTThe physical environment of the classroom is very conducive to learning. The classroom is clean, properly ventilated and lighted, and free from noise distraction. Also the bulletin and displays were neatly arranged. They have seat plan so the seats of the students are organized and permanent. I think the seating arrangement also suits the learning experience of the pupils. The classroom furniture is matching the size of the students. DISCIPLINE The teacher is establish ing the discipline inside the classroom by following some rules and guidelines.First is by selecting a discipline policy that is appropriate for her students. She considers her students' age and developmental level when selecting a plan. Second is by pairing the rules with both consequences and rewards. If she will punish misbehavior, she also wants to recognize good behavior. She tries to mix positive and negative nearly equally in her plan to ensure that students see that good behavior is rewarded just as much as bad behavior is punished. Third she created a poster on which this discipline policy is clearly outlined.Featuring her policy on a poster allows students to refer to the regulations regularly and gives her something to which to draw students' attention when discussing behavior. She placed her poster prominently on a classroom wall. I think her approach is very preventive. By creating and implementing a classroom discipline plan to prepare her students to follow the rules and regulations that they will be bound by once they reach adulthood. Simultaneously, she'll be maintaining a calm, productive classroom atmosphere conducive to conventional studies. ROUTINESThe  routines  are  properly  established  and  organized. The  teacher  is  alsofollowing some guidelines in establishing routine in the classroom. she organizes her classroom to be effective in providing structure and routine before her students arrive. There  should  be  a  space  for  their  backpacks,  lunches  and  homework. She labels everything clearly. Materials and sections of the classroom should also be labeled. This will allow students to become more familiar with where things go. Then when she says it is time to clean up, they will be able to do so effectively. Third, she sets a schedule.This sounds easy, but it is very important. Structure and routine are essential to keeping children focused and your stress level down. And I think all the pro cedures are placed properly and effectively. When routines and procedures are carefully taught, modeled, and established in the classroom, children know what’s expected of them and how to do certain things on their own. Having these predictable patterns in place allows teachers to spend more time in meaningful instruction. The instructions are carried both individually and by group and the teacher ensures that furniture arrangement promotes learning opportunities.Teacher success, in relation to both student learning and teacher efficacy, can often be traced to the ability of the teacher to manage the classroom. Research shows that effective classroom organization and management during the first few weeks of  school are crucial in deter mining expectations and behavior patterns. I think the teacher really implement and create a good organizational plan. I have observed that she provides a productive, safe environment conducive to learning. 3. Record Keeping Effective, continuous record keeping lies at the heart of our best teaching and learning.It enables us to plan, to organize, and to create the best learning environment for each child. Record keeping is an effective tool for tracking contributions made by individual students in our classroom, for assessing students, for informing students and parents about growth overtime, and for setting goals. I think the teacher has effective record keeping technique. She’s right in creating a seat plan to easily check the attendance of the pupils. Physical Environment The physical environment of the classroom is very conducive to learning. The classroom is clean, properly ventilated and lighted, and free from noise distraction. Also the bulletin and displays were nea tly arranged. They have seat plan so the seats of the students are organized and permanent. I think the seating arrangement also suits the learning experience of the pupils. The classroom furniture is truly matching the size of the students. Every teacher knows that a safe, clean, comfortable and attractive classroom can stimulate learning and help build a classroom community.But for many teachers, setting up the physical environment of  their classrooms can be quite daunting, especially when faced with older buildings, crowded classrooms and insufficient storage space. I think the teacher did a good job in creating a physical environment that is very conducive to learning. She has a classroom suited to the learning ability and level of her Grade II pupils. I can conclude that if she maintains it, definitely she can come up with her goals in providing a classroom promoting a healthy and wonderful learning experience. I think the routines she formulated are very unique yet effectiv e.Actually, if I’ll be in the actual field, I’m going to follow her superb and operative routines so that I can also ensure a well managed time and well organized classroom. 6. Routines The routines are properly established and organized. The teacher is also following some guidelines in establishing routine in the classroom. First she organizes her classroom to be effective in providing structure and routine before her students arrive. There should be a space for their backpacks, lunches and homework. Second, she labels everything clearly. Materials and sections of the classroom should also be labeled.This will allow students to become more familiar with where things go. Then when she says it is time to clean up, they will be able to do so effectively. Third, she sets a schedule. This sounds easy, but it is very important. When students arrive in her classroom they should know that they have until a certain time before their desks should be cleared and the teaching sta rts. Also she plans for the in-between times as well. Structure and routine are essential to keeping children focused and your stress level down. And I think all the procedures are placed properly and effectively.When routines and procedures are carefully taught, modeled, and established in the classroom, children know what’s expected of them and how to do certain things on their own. My Analysis 1. In what area of classroom management was the teacher most effective? Which of  the supportive measures were effective? Why? The area of classroom management wherein she’s most effective is discipline. I think all of her supportive measures were efficacious. During my observation, I’ve noticed that the pupils were well disciplined and behave not only during discussion but even the teacher is away.So it just shows that the guidelines she’s following to maintain  a  good  discipline is  working. She already  starts  to  develop  good  moral ch aracter among pupils. 2. In what area of classroom management was the teacher least effective? Which supportive measures were not effective? Why? I think she’s very effective in all aspects. I am not seeing any flaws regarding her organizational plan, record, keeping, physical environment, scheduling, discipline and routine. It might not be perfect but I think the important thing is to fulfill your goals in accordance to your guidelines. . Suggest more effective ways for your answer in number 2. Since I am seeing her classroom management with no flaws, I’ll just leave a good message about it. Effective classroom management is about the teacher keeping the students actively involved in the entire lesson. It is the assignment of authority and responsibility to another person to carry out specific activities. 2. What characteristics do you have at present that can make you an effective classroom manager? Elaborate how these characteristics can help you. I think I have the empathy, adaptability, and decision making skills.I can definitely sue those skills to ensure an effective classroom management. Adaptability will of  course help me to adjust easily to situations and changes. For example, if I’ll be transfer in different classroom I can still create a new and good atmosphere to my students which will promote a conducive learning environment. Also, if I have the empathy I can understand their  individual differences which will help  me to maintain and foster good discipline and routines inside the classroom. Elimination of Ethnic and Religious Discrimination Essay

The word discrimination can be defined as, â€Å"treatment or consideration of, or making a distinction in favor of or against, a person or thing based on the group, class, or category to which that person or thing belongs rather than on individual merit.† One large type of discrimination in the world of today is religious and ethnic discrimination. Religious and ethnic discrimination is when someone discriminates against another person based solely on their religious beliefs or background and their ethnicity. Unfortunately, religious and ethnic discrimination are problems which stretch across the globe and occur in almost every country. One of the most well known cases of religious discrimination was the Holocaust. For those of you who may be unfamiliar with it, the Holocaust was the genocide of approximately six million European Jews and millions of others during World War II. The Holocaust was led by Nazi-leader Adolf Hitler; he discriminated and disliked the Jews merely because they were Jewish. Rather than actually getting to know any of them and then judging their character once he was a bit more familiar with them, he made a superficial judgment, decided he disliked them, started to discriminate against them, and eventually led the Holocaust. He merely disliked and discriminated against them because of their religion, regardless of who they really were, that it pure religious discrimination. A well known example of ethnic discrimination is the segregation that occurred in the USA during the 20th century, more specifically the early to mid 20th century. Segregation is, â€Å"the enforced separation of different racial groups in a country, community, or establishment.† Schools, living properties, and even playground are just small few of the large amount that was segregated at that time. Although this delegation is not pleased to say it, there is religious and ethnic discrimination in Tunisia as well. Tunisian singer Salah Misbah says that he is constantly discriminated against because of the dark color of his skin, supposedly having been called names such as, â€Å"a dirty slave†. There are also some cases of religious discrimination in the constitution of Tunisia. It declares the country’s determination to adhere to the teachings of Islam, stipulates that Islam is the official state religion, and that the President be Muslim, therefore discriminating against all who are not Muslim. Also, The Government does not permit the establishment of political parties on the basis of religion and prohibits proselytizing, which means attempting to convert someone to your faith, by non-Muslims. Tunisia recognizes that discrimination of any kind is wrong, especially these two, and, for that reason welcomes the possible solutions to this problem. Although religious and ethnic discrimination may seem like a difficult problem to handle, there are solutions. Unjust discrimination of any kind can normally be linked with poor education. If children are taught well about other traditions, religions, and cultures they are less likely to discriminate against people of those backgrounds. Another, slightly harsher, possible solution could be for the government to adopt a no-tolerance policy in relation to religious and racial crimes. Out of fear of being punished, it might dissuade those who are inclined to commit religious and racial crimes. In conclusion, if the necessary education is given, and laws or tolerance polices set in place, it may decrease the amount of religious and ethnic discrimination around the globe. Unfortunately, try as we might it seems as if religious and ethnic discrimination are problems which may never be fully and completely eliminated and eradicated, but that will not stop Tunisia, and hopefully the rest of the UN, from trying our best to do so! However, the damage of the BP oil spill would have far more reaching ramifications than most people would have ever expected. Oil is made up of carbon and hydrogen molecules. Their states allows it easily to â€Å"goopâ₠¬  together and stick to anything that it comes in contact with. This is dangerous enough, but because the incident occurred in the mid-ocean it allowed it to move farther and faster than spills in the past. The effects of the spill could be felt immediately by the neighboring environments; be it plant life, animals or human beings. Hobbes and Locke Essay Thomas Hobbes and John Locke are indeed, two of the most brilliant philosophers that ever existed. They may have similarities and differences between them, but it is undeniable that their ideas contributed a lot in shaping the modern world. Both Hobbes and Locke perceive man as a central figure in a society. For Hobbes, it is man’s nature to be mindful of him exclusively, with self-interest going above everything else. On the other hand, Locke perceives man as both self-interested and concerned about other people. The two really have similarities and differences, but in order to know more about them, we need to compare their stand about various aspects of society. One important aspect that we could consider is sovereignty (Williams, 2006). Hobbes made it clear in his Leviathan that a political society’s sole task was to identify a person or a group as the sovereign. This pertains to an election of some sort, which would determine who would be the sovereign. Hobbes regards this sovereign as someone with absolute power, and that every person in the society should give him/them their absolute obedience. For Hobbes, the only time that the people would be sovereign is when they choose who will be the distinguished sovereign of all. Locke on the other hand, would put the public good above all else, thus affecting his notion of sovereignty (John Locke, 2004). In Locke’s Second Treatise of Government, he recognizes the permanence and irrevocability of the social contract, but this limits the legislation only for public good. If and whenever the public trust is violated, say perhaps the people in power overlooked the public good, then they would have to answer to the people. They retained the power to remove or replace the legislative, considered to be sovereign, with a new legislative. Though it is unclear in Locke’s writings, he somehow deposits sovereignty in the people. He recognizes the sovereignty that a legislative may have, but still, it is in the hands of the people to correct any inappropriate actions that violate the public good. Another aspect that we could use to compare Locke and Hobbes is their idea about government. But before that, we need to consider first how these two look at the natural law that all men follow. For Hobbes, man follows a naturally law that eventually leads to a state of war. Their equality leads to conflict between each other, eventually leading to war and chaos. Locke on the other hand, would consider man’s natural law as a movement towards equality and freedom. Both men draw their ideas about the government from their concept of natural law. For Hobbes, government is important because it can be used to control natural law. For Locke on the other hand, government is important in order to preserve natural law. In relation to this, another aspect that we can consider in comparing Hobbes and Locke is their idea about rights. Thomas Hobbes believed that the natural law that man follows result from the rights possessed by each person to do everything in the world. Since they’re allowed to do whatever they want because of the rights they possess, conflict would be unavoidable. In order to avoid this state of war, man follows a social contract in order to create a civil society. This requires them to forfeit or cede some of their natural rights in order to be protected. This somehow controls them from exercising all of their rights, but somehow protecting them from the impending destruction that results from conflicts and wars. As for John Locke, he believes that all of us possess Natural Rights, which is brought about by the state of nature that we follow in the society. These include the right to life, liberty, and property. Both Thomas Hobbes and John Locke believe that all men are equal according to the natural law. For Hobbes however, this equality is seen in a state of war, caused by man’s right to everything. These rights lead them into conflict and boils down to chaos. Still, Hobbes believe that this state of war to be an equal field, wherein the weakest can still kill the strongest. There is no one above others in this state of war. He also believes that all man is sensible by nature, and can agree upon each other to avoid these constant wars. Locke on the other hand, sees man optimistically, wherein they are governed according to reason, thus coexisting equally and peacefully. They are all equal in terms of the rights they possess, thus putting them on the same level as everyone else. Thomas Hobbes and John Locke both agree on the importance of civilizing man. It either control or preserve natural law, either way, it is beneficial. Putting this on the idea of â€Å"the savage†, we can see that they give emphasis on the importance of civilizing man because it makes him better. We can say that for these two, man can’t do away with the social establishments that he created, including the government and their notion of sovereignty, as it preserves and promote order in the society, something that both philosophers can somehow agree upon.

Existentialism Is a Humanism Essay Sartre is trying to defend existentialism against some disapproval to it. The Communist criticized existentialism as an invitation to people to take interest in hopeless world affairs. On the other hand, Christians reproached from the fact that people deny the need of attention in human affairs. People have the will to do anything they want and wish. With the example given, about ignoring the Ten Commandments, we can people deny the value of following the commandments and will only follow it if they wish. THE MEANING OF EXISTENTIALISM. According to Sartre, existentialism is a principle that provides human life possible. It also determines that every truth and action we know involves both an environmental and a human subjectivity. The two types of existentialist are the Christians and Existential Atheists. What they have in common is that they both believe in â€Å"existence comes before essence†, which means that a human has no predetermined essence or nature. â€Å"Man is nothing else but that which he makes of himself. † If a man cannot define himself, then he is bound to happen that he is nothing. The paper-knife example talks about how an artisan conceptualized an object, how he paid close attention to it and knew what the purpose of the object would be. The paper-knife is existentially different from human because for Existential Atheists, which Sartre is included, man defines himself and not the creator that conceived him. RESPONSIBILITY An implication given in the lecture is how a being would be able to existence would come before its essence even if God does not exist. Sartre mentioned that there is no human nature because we define ourselves and not by any force that lives inside us. By Sartre saying that â€Å"in choosing for himself, he chooses for all men†, he means that when humans make decisions, it affirms that value of which he had chosen. The choices we consider are always the better, and nothing can be better for us unless it is better for all. When a human chooses to do something for himself, like marrying and have children, he is still creating and contributing an image for the whole the whole mankind. ANGUISH Existentialist frankly state that man is in anguish because he only decides for himself, not realizing that the whole mankind is resting upon his shoulders. When we are in verge of act, we should ask ourselves â€Å"What would happen if everyone did so? † In asking this, we would be able to fully re-evaluate the actions or decisions we’re about to do. In the story of Abraham and the hallucinating women, we are taught on how to ask ourselves with that question. It is not enough to do an act with merely hearing the command. We should prove to ourselves that what we are about to follow would be reasonable and just. ABANDONMENT Sartre said that if God did not to exist, nothing would really change. He believed that we would still have the same progress that we have now. But for the existentialist, they would be embarrassed because it disappears with God the possibility of finding values in an intelligible heaven. For Dostoevksy, if God did not exist, everything will be permitted. He said that human would be free from doing anything they wish. One will be never to be able to explain one’s action because he doesn’t have anything to refer to. On the other hand, he proposes that if God does not exist there wouldn’t be values or commands that will legitimize our behavior. Existentialists believe in the power of passion. They believe that man is responsible for his passion, not some drive that is hidden inside a man. The story of the student teaches us that we should trust our instinct. With his dilemma, whether to join the Forces or to stay with him mom, he based his decision on what he felt. Because he had been living with his mother, the value of feeling to be always by her side is developed. Thus, he chose not to live his mother. In addition, the Jesuit’s story tells us that through our decisions and action, we are bound to choose our own path and bear the entire responsibility. DESPAIR According to Sartre, the definition of despair is that â€Å"we limit ourselves to a reliance upon which is within our will, or within the sum of the probabilities which render our action feasible. † I think the reason why Sartre thought that when Descartes said, â€Å"Conquer yourself rather than the world,† what he meant was â€Å"we should act without hope† is because both statements are saying that we should be in control of ourselves. The Marxists believe that you can rely upon the help of others. That even when you die, other will still continue what you did and help. While Sartre’s argument is that he cannot fully trust those people he doesn’t know. Yes, he can entrust his works and life with his comrades and family, but not to strangers. Does that mean that I should abandon myself to quietism? NO. What we should do is to commit ourselves then act the commitment made. Sartre stated that man is nothing else than what he proposes. Because he hasn’t found anything yet he seeks, he continues to living until the day he found it. â€Å"You are nothing else but what you live†, this means that â€Å"a man is no other than a series of undertaking, that he is the sum, the organization, the set of relations that constitute these undertaking. † Behaviors of the people are caused by the actions happening in their environment upon them. The implication given was how a coward became a coward, and a hero became a hero. Being a coward is the act of giving up. How sternness of optimism here is seen on how a man can make himself a coward or hero, through his action and thinking. In the end, what counts is that â€Å"the destiny of man is placed within himself. † There wouldn’t be any hope or changes unless he starts doing something. SUBJECTIVITY What Sartre and Descartes both agree on is that truth must first have an absolute truth. If not, it will crumble into nothing. Sartre thinks that the theory alone is incompatible with the dignity of man because â€Å"it is the only one which does not make man into an object. † Their main aim of that view is to distinguish the human kingdom as pattern of values to that of the material world. THE OTHER Sartre believes that when we are trying to think to discover ourselves, we are to discover everything from others. To recognize oneself is to be recognize by other people. With â€Å"I cannot obtain any truth whatsoever about myself, except through the mediation of another†, Sartre is saying that we need other to seek the truth that we are trying to find. That being an individual is not enough to find the truth and identity. INTER-SUBJECTIVITY We should understand that â€Å"all the limitations which a priori define man’s fundamental situation in the universe. † The historical situation of every man is different from what they experienced. Human condition is saying that from having freedom, we are also entitled to take full responsibility of it. I think it is possible to understand and value something about all people because there is still universality, which mean that in somehow we can still understand things outside ourselves. BAD FAITH One of the implications are â€Å"every man realizes himself in realizing a type of humanity†, meaning that if a man decides to classify himself, he would be able to realizes himself. There is no difference between free being and absolute being. Lying to yourself by saying that it doesn’t matter to you is a bad faith. It is wrong to say that what you choose doesn’t matter to you. People can always choose, but in not choosing is still a choice. â€Å"†¦without reference to any pre-established value, but it is unjust to tax him with caprice. † I do agree what he is trying to say here. Because he has no knowledge of a pre-established value, there is no sudden change in his choice. When Sartre that we make ourselves, what he meant is that through our actions and decisions we are forming our identity. FREEDOM In saying â€Å"You are unable to judge others†, it is true in one sense and false in the other. Whenever a man chooses his decisions and purpose, it is now impossible to choose another one. It is true in the sense that we do not believe in progress. The goal of freedom is to judge the logical value and not a judgment of value. They also search for the real meaning of freedom. How can the existentialists form judgment? By saying that he deceives himself and by doing that you are having good faith. â€Å"One can choose anything, but only if it is upon the plane of free commitment. † With this, we can conclude that selecting choices involving the commitment of oneself. INVENTION OF VALUES His response is an analogy, â€Å"if I have excluded God the Father, there must be somebody to invent values. † He disagrees on the kind of humanism that takes man as an end. He says so because man is still to be determined and should be considered as an end. What he meant by â€Å"Transcendence† is a man’s relation to his world and that of the people around him. Because man wants to surpass what he has done, he is in the center of his transcendence. A man can realize himself as truly human when he decides for himself, always seek truth and beyond himself and having an aim of some particular realization. CONCLUSION From his point of view, even if God did not exist, it would make no difference. Because for existentialists the real problem is how man will be able to find himself to in order to save himself, by not giving full reliance of God’s existence. Existentialism is a doctrine of action in a way that they confine their own despair with existentialists that Christians can describe them as without hope.

Sociological Analysis of Media Article Select and present an article from a current newspaper or magazine in your country, (the UK), that offers an assessment of some social problem. Assess the data in the article in terms of a social scientists perspective. What is your conclusion regarding the article.? Introduction Relationships between the West and the Muslim world have been of considerable interest both to politicians and to the general public, especially sociologists. Since the events of 9/11 in America the world has been confronted with the fact that there is a faction within Islam that will do anything to make its voice heard and to further its concerns in the West. This paper therefore has selected a newspaper article concerned with the publication of some cartoons involving the Prophet Mohammed. This has caused considerable upset in the Muslim world and is given a different presentation in different publications. The article selected for analysis here is taken from the Daily Mirror, Saturday 4th February. This paper will assess the data in the article from the perspective of a social scientist and will then give some conclusions regarding the article. Sociological analysis of documents is usually described as content analysis and there are a number of ways in which this type of analysis may be undertaken. Some sociologists use formal content analysis where a number of different texts on a given subject are used. This also sometimes involves the use of statistics (Giddens, 2001). Content analysis may also involve thematic and textual analysis. This paper will use a thematic and textual analysis (as described by Bryman, 2004) to analyse the chosen article. Scott (1990) maintains that great care should be taken when analysing documents, particularly media documents. The person undertaking the analysis needs to be aware of their own position and prejudices at the outset and how this might impact on their reading and understanding of the text. There are, therefore, problems of reliability with this kind of analysis. Language and Ideology The article that I have chosen to analyse is entitled â€Å"Muslims Day of Rage: Muslim cartoon Protest rock the world and Britain† by Victoria Ward and Stephen White. The article concerns the protests and violent reactions to the publication by a Danish newspaper of cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammed as a terrorist. The first thing that was noted was the title. Muslim’s Day of Rage, this is the kind of phrase that is likely to add to the Islamaphobia that has been growing in the West since the events of 9/11 and the London terrorist bombings last July. The wording implies that all Muslims were not only upset and insulted by the cartoons, bearing in mind that all forms of representation not only of the prophet, but of human beings are forbidden in Islam, but that most of them are engaging in violent protest. This analysis of the title is confirmed by the opening lines of the article: FURIOUS Muslims warned Europe it would pay with blood yesterday for publishing a cartoon of the prophet Mohammed as a terrorist (Daily Mirror, 4/2/06-no page number given). Again the article does not differentiate between groups of Muslim protestors and the Muslim community at large. It tends to suggest that the vast majority of Muslims take the view that Europe should be made to pay in blood for the insult. This kind of wording is likely to incite religious and racial hatred. Looking at the article as a whole it might be said that the ideology underlying this article relates to Islamaphobia and is perhaps connected to the writers’ own fears of terrorist attacks. This theme of Muslim violence can be detected throughout the article. What is most problematic about this is that the article does not clearly differentiate between those Muslims engaging in demonstrations and violent protest, and those Muslims who are not. The language is used in such a way that it appears to apply to all Muslims and represents them as an angry and violent group. Representation The title and opening lines of the article I would suggest, tend to represent Muslim people as a homogenous group who want to see the West pay for the outrageous insult to the Prophet. The writers go on to speak of demonstrations that were charged with hatred in London where the Danish flag was burned and some protestors were claiming that ‘another 7/7 is on its way’ (referring to the tube and bus bombings in London last year). The article refers only briefly to the cartoon itself: The offending cartoon, which first appeared in a small Danish newspaper, showed the prophet Mohammed wearing a bomb-shaped turban. Islamic tradition bars any depiction of the prophet to prevent idolatry (Daily Mirror, 4/2/06) No criticism is made of the paper that printed the cartoon, of the cartoonist that produced it, or even of the fact that to Muslims such a cartoon would be viewed as blasphemous. While not wishing to endorse violent protests or to take sides it would seem that the article treats the subject with a very uneven handed approach. Clearly the writers, although this is not mentioned, hold to the idea of free speech and the freedom of the press. The question is why should this unheralded endorsement of free speech be contrasted with the representation of ‘furious’ and ‘angry’ Muslims. The ways in which the information is presented arguably gives a distorted picture of the whole issue. The cartoon is given much less space and attention than the acts of groups of Muslim protestors and tends to minimalise the offence that even the majority of non-demonstrating/protesting Muslims must have felt. Passive and Active Language The sentence relating to the cartoon is written in the passive voice, it says that the cartoon ‘first appeared’ as though it was not the work of human hands. By contrast all the recorded incidents concerning the protestors and the demonstrators are presented in the active mode as the following two extracts show. In Jakarta, Indonesia, more than 150 Muslims stormed a building housing the Danish Embassy and tore down and burned the countrys white and red flag (Daily Mirror, 4/2/06). Thousands of Palestinian refugees marched through the streets of their camps in Lebanon, burning flags and urging Osama bin Laden to avenge Mohammad (Daily Mirror, 4/2/06). No information is given as to the accuracy of the number of Palestinian refugees, the authors cite demonstrations from across the world and so some of those represented must have come from secondary sources, live news bulletins or other papers but it is not stated where such information came from or how the numbers given in the article for example the article states that more than 10,000 Palestinians were burning Danish cheese. The ways in which these numbers are presented and the fact that the newspaper makes consistent use of verbs to describe the protests and demonstrations gives what might be said to be an inflated view of what has been going on. The reader could be forgiven for believing that many thousands of Muslims across the globe have been involved in demonstrations and violent protests. Clearly this does not make violent action and threats of violence right but perhaps journalistic ethics were not hugely in evidence judging by the way in which this information was presente d. Towards the end of the article Jack Straw condemned the cartoon, but again, not the cartoonist who produced it not the editor that published it. His comes as a voice of calm reason at the end of a litany of violent protest and threats of violence, adding to the overall picture of Muslims as enraged and violent rather than groups of Muslim protestors. At the end of the article the writers point to the fact that the secretary general of the Muslim Council of Great Britain urged Muslims not to be provoked by the extreme actions of those elements who were out to exploit the situation. It would seem that this might be a clearer picture of events than that which the writers of the article have presented us with. Conclusion In this paper I have attempted to analyse, from the point of view of a social scientist, a newspaper article that is concerned with protests and demonstrations by some groups of Muslims over their upset at the publication of a cartoon which present the Prophet Mohammed as a terrorist. I have used a textual and thematic analysis in reading this article and have tried to cover most of its aspects. In undertaking this analysis I was acutely aware that the way in which the article was written annoyed me because I felt that it did not give an accurate picture of Muslims as a whole. It seemed that some of the language used by the writers was used not just to persuade, but to inflame and that this could lead to counter-protest on behalf of those people who see Islam and its people as a threat to Western civilisation. The Battle   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The sun was touching the tree tops as it slowly descended in the horizon. Shadows were cast on the ground. The air was still hot and humid from the midday. A bit of a breeze was beginning to blow from the east sending a slight chill through our spines. We stepped unto the grounds and surveyed our surroundings. The playing field was perfect just like we had all imagined it would be. In the far distance there was woods along with a wide shallow stream. In front there was a field scattered with shields and barricades. We divided into units and went to gather up our gear. With our equipment in hand the whistle blows and friends become foes. Our mission was to survive, be the last team standing, we were to annihilate our opponents. With the signal given the war was under way.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  My teammates and I gathered together at our base. There we came up with a battle plan. We were to separate and head in different directions eventually meeting up at an undisclosed location where we would ambush the enemy’s base . After everyone was clear on the objective we split up and went out to battle.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I ran across the field to the nearest shield and collected my thoughts. I could hear the orders being shouted from my fellow comrades in the distance as they engaged in a brawl with the enemy, â€Å"duck, cover, fire, fire†. Soon the brawl ended with a small victory as they scattered out into the sunset. My heart was pounding in my stomach. The sounds of the earth were magnified in my ears. Then it came to me, this was a war, this was life or death. Shoot or be shot, the setting had changed. With the new thoughts in mind I held tightly onto my gun gathered all my strength and courage and charged into battle.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I made my way slowly and quietly into the deep woods, like a recon soldier. My mind and senses were focused on the enemy. As I made my way down the beaten path I spotted movement in a far bush. I dropped to the ground and pushed my body flat against the cold earth. After a few seconds of silence I knew that I had not been seen. I crawled around the bush so I could see my pray. She sat there so still she blended in with the green color of the leaves.

It is quite evident as you walk around the streets of almost any city or town in America that the line between what was once considered the black style of dress and the white styles has become less and less evident. This is especially true with the younger kids in junior high and high school. The baggy pants and shirts with labels and bright colors that were once reserved for the inner city black and Latino kids, are now being worn by whites in wealthy suburban neighborhoods.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  I lived in a wealthy upper middle class area outside of Nashville Tennessee for most of my life and over the past five to ten years the change in style of dress for suburban kids has become more and more evident. Main stream stores such as Dillard’s and Castner Knot’s started carrying the underground hip-hop clothes that were once only found in the larger cities. Even major labels such as Tommy Hillfigger started designing larger clothes with brighter colors. There jeans were available in relaxed fit and even baggy. Hip Hop had now become a large market for young teenagers and people in their early twenties. I went to a private school with a very strict dress code and even there you could tell that the new urban fashion was having an effect on the way some students dressed. They would try to get baggier pants and would wear bright colored shirts with logos on the front. At ballgames they would wear baggy blue jeans and sweatshirts with â€Å"Polo† or â€Å"Nautica† emblems on the front. Whenever we had a casual day all the kids would go to the mall and you would see the baggy jeans and bright shirts on everyone. When the weather got colder kids at school started wearing the bomber ski jackets, so many people at my school had them that the school maid them illegal to wear. Also more and more guys started wearing the large hiking boots that were to bulky for their khaki pants, so they had to cut them at the bottom to fit around the boots.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   I don’t know exactly how these trends came about but I remember it started when I was in seventh or eighth grade. At first it was the large â€Å"Starter† jackets with The Raiders or Miami Dolphins logos on them, and then it went to overalls and Adidas shoes and jackets.

Imagining the New Britain

Yasmin Alibhai-Brown presents the various social and political transformations that took place in Great Britain during the latter part of the 20th century (Brown 3). Because of class mobility and increasing differences in population structure, values, and cultural identities, the country had undergone alterations in terms of its domestic, foreign, and military policies. Thus, the author notes that these changes would decide the political, economic, and social history of the country.Social and racial changes were highly noted in Britain during the 1950s and 1960s. According to the author, prior to the said period, racial discrimination was absent in Britain. The ‘colored’ people comprised only an insignificant portion of the population. Their political influence was of no value to the ruling counties and districts. Beginning in the 1960s, the population of black and Asian migrants increased. Discrimination began to take course, as some of these migrants were able to acqui re economic and political power in the noted sectors of the country.Although reluctant to put the migrants to equal footing with the â€Å"native† citizens, the Parliament passed successive race relations acts in order to prevent racism from taking grip of the social climate of the country. In other words, the government of Britain feared a US-type of racism; a form of racism that would cause riots and possibly revolutions. The â€Å"native† population reacted indifferently to the social changes occurring in the country since it did not really changed their political and economic standing.Political changes were also noted in the 1970s. With the increase of Asian and black migrants, there was also an increase of Asian and black MPs in parliament. The increase though was insignificant compared to the number of seats acquired by traditional politicians representing the â€Å"native† population of Britain. When the Labour Party won the election in 1997, several Asia n and black MPs were appointed to important positions in the government.This was in recognition of the important contributions of the colored minority in the economic rehabilitation of the country in the 1980s (and their significant contribution in the country’s GDP). In addition, the inclusion of Asian and black MPs in the prime ministers cabinet was a startegy of the Labour Party to acquire the votes of the minorities (especially in large industrial cities). Here, one would note that the minorities, although still underrepresented in parliament had acquired some â€Å"slice† of political power.The author notes that in recent years, religious discrimination is being revived by fundamentalist Anglicans (Brown 19). The establishment of several Catholic schools (run by the Jesuits) in the country infuriated many Anglicans; religious hatred that can be traced in the 15th and 16th centuries. According to these fundamentalist Anglicans (interviewees of the author), Catholic converts in Britain were being brainwashed by the Catholic clergy on certain issues like abortion, divorce, and the use of contraception.This â€Å"brainwash† was according to them a grand strategy of the Roman Catholic Church to disrupt the social and political infrastracture of the country. The author concludes that these changes were the result of Britain’s increasing mixed population.
